How I Cut My Screen Time By 56.7%
If you’ve ever checked your screen time and felt a little called out, you’re not alone. Just a while ago, I found myself spending 7 hours and 28 minutes per day glued to my phone. That’s basically a full-time job.
But these past two months? I got it down to just 3 hours and 14 minutes, a 56.7% reduction. Here's how I did it, what I learned, and why you might want to try it too.
The Before: 7 Hours and 28 Minutes
I didn’t realize just how much time I was spending on my phone until I looked at my screen time report. Between social media scrolling, YouTube rabbit holes, and mindless app hopping, my day was disappearing...and my focus along with it.
The Mindset Shift
I didn't want to quit my phone cold turkey. Instead, I focused on intentional use. I asked myself:
Why am I picking up my phone so often?
What apps am I spending time on that I actually don't need?
The Methods I Tried & What Works:
Here’s what I tried and how it turned out:
1. Set App Limits: I capped TikTok to 30 minutes/day. But it is so easy to hit ignore and continue scrolling.
2. App Audit & Delete Time Wasters: I went through the apps I spend the most time on, Instagram...deleted it, Facebook, deleted...
3. Moved Apps Off My Home Screen: Out of sight, out of mind, right? Wrong. I just ended up searching when I needed it.
4. Offload Apps - Very effective for apps you need but end up scrolling on..
5. Turn Notifications from Useless Apps off: The only notifications I have on are messages and emails. Anything else..not important.
The After: 3 Hours and 14 Minutes
I dropped to 3h 14m per day, just 43.3% of my original usage. That means I gained back over 4 hours a day.
That’s time I spent:
* Reading
* Actually being bored (which is underrated)
* Working on creative projects (like the YouTube video that goes with this post!)
* Working on building my freelancing work
* Trading
* Going Out
What I Learned
* I don’t need to reply instantly to every notification.
* Most scrolling is just distraction, not relaxation.
* You don’t have to “quit” your phone, just be more deliberate with it.
"Do something your future self would thank you for."
